This professional course is ideal for all educators who are interested in integrating relaxation techniques in the classroom or in one 2 one sessions. This includes Teacher, Teaching Assistants, Learning Mentors, SENCOs, Children's Centre Managers, Nursery Managers, Family Workers and Extended Services Teams. This course is suitable for those who have not used relaxation techniques before and those who have some experience. ‘Relax Kids resources are in my opinion the best in the world. They have been successfully applied in many schools throughout the UK and abroad and are helping to establish values-based education. A significant number of Primary Schools are developing refection and visualisation as an aid to pupil development. This work is gaining in popularity and the Relax Kids materials are being widely used to support the personal, social, spiritual and cultural elements of the curriculum. Relaxation in the classroom does make a difference!’ Neil Hawkes, International Education Consult Why is relaxation important in schools? Child anxiety is on the increase. Between 2006 and 2010, numbers of children with a mental health problem have doubled from 1 in 10 to 1 in 5 (British Medical Association 2006, Office of National Statistics 2004, The Telegraph 2009, Times Online 2010). Research by the University of East London shows that regular relaxation in schools can not only help improve a pupil’s general health and wellbeing but can benefit their achievement and results. Many children suffer from stress due to concerns about climate change, global warming and pollution as well as terrorism and street violence that they hear about on the news. Relax Kids (as seen on BBC Dragons’ Den) sessions offers school children a chance to chill out and relax. The sessions teach children relaxation techniques and tools to help them cope with their stresses and anxieties whilst building their confidence and self-esteem. These techniques give children a toolbox to help them cope with the transitions they experience throughout nursery and primary school. Sessions include stretching, breathing techniques, massage, positive self-talk and visualisation exercises put together in a fun package for children. The Relax Kids programme and resources are being used by schools and nurseries around the UK. ‘As a Local Authority teacher for mental health I wholeheartedly recommend Relaxation in Schools Programme to all schools I work with. Individual children and whole classes love to use the exercises and resouces, which provide them with a great sense of emotional wellbeing. This is wonderful for teachers, teaching assistants and learning mentors, especially used alongside SEAL materials, and also for some of the more ‘troubled youngsters.’ John Fardon – Mental Health Teacher Northamptonshire Learning Outcomes • self awareness, awareness of others and the environment • improves children’s emotional literacy, behavioural and social skills • improves self-esteem and confidence – promoting a positive sense of self • aids anger management as children learn to manage their feelings and take responsibility for their emotions and actions • encourages empathy as children take time to consider other peoples feelings and to think from different perspectives • promotes listening skills and helps children concentrate and focus • helps children with hyperactivity, ADHD, Autism and behavioural problems • children become more imaginative, visual and creative • children feel more confident and aware of their abilities • the classroom is quieter and calmer • children are happier and caring • teachers feel less stressed and have some time to breathe Physical Outcomes: self awareness, relaxes muscles, calms nerves, boosts immune system, general wellbeing.
