Relax Kids Dorset - Meet Katie

Meet the wonderful coach behind Relax Kids Dorset

Becoming a Relax Kids coach can be a big step in anybody's life, but one thing all coaches can agree on is that it's a step worth taking. Katie, our coach from Dorset, took that step and hasn't looked back since.

She's been kind enough to tell us her story...

'Hi there, I'm Katie Daly and I am the face behind Relax Kids Dorset.

My background is teaching, having taught both in London and Dorset. After my first born in 2007, I decided to take a career pause. Even though I was not formally teaching I did do a bit of private tutoring along the way and also became very interested in mindfulness and carried out an eight-week MBSR course.

It was following this course, my quest began to find something similar for children, as I was using a lot of the mindfulness techniques with my students - and there it was, Relax Kids! I vividly remember finding it whilst geeking on the internet late one evening and even waking my husband up excitedly! It was a Eureka moment; I just knew this was exactly what I wanted to do. It combined my love of teaching with my passion for children's mental health and interest in mindfulness. It was also incredibly timely as my eldest daughter was about to start school and we started to use the books, CDs and star cards straight away. This was in 2011 and by August 2012, I had trained to become a coach.

The training was fantastic on so many levels. We were blessed with fantastic weather and the most amazing location; overlooking the beach and out to sea at Branksome Dene in Poole, Dorset. Marneta led the training over the two days and her knowledge and passion were both infectious and inspiring. I trained with a fantastic group of people, which I am still in touch with today and get to meet up with at the annual Coaches Conference.

Following the training, I quickly became certified and was raring to go but plans were put slightly on hold in 2013 when I found out I was pregnant with baby number three. This didn't stop me though and I still kept my toe in the Relax Kids water by following updates on the coaches Facebook page, helping out on events such as the Relax Kids photo shoots and joining the training in Poole for a few hours with my kiddies, so the trainees can try their new found techniques out with little ones.

Fast forward a couple of years and Relax Kids Dorset is going from strength to strength. I have worked in so many areas; from joining forces with a local mindfulness teacher to running parent workshops.

2017 has been amazing. Alongside my weekly classes and 1:1 work, I am now working in two local schools with others asking for my availability, I am working with local council running workshops for both newly qualified social workers and foster parents. I've been invited to hold workshops at a school academy conference and I am working with a local cancer charity running a six-week course for children. I also have a very active Facebook page with over 500 followers.

I have received such wonderful feedback from parents, head teachers and children. I feel truly blessed to be doing this job - in fact, it feels strange to say it's a job, it really does feel it's just my way of life. It's absolutely fantastic when the children share with you how they used the techniques to overcome emotional situations, such as dance exams, moving schools, family separations or conflict with peers/siblings. Also when they have been coming to your classes regularly you start to observe their confidence and their self-belief grow through the use of positive affirmations and positive self-talk.

Behind the scenes the network of coaches is vast and we all speak daily via our Facebook group. Here you can ask anything and everything. Coaches all over the world come together and share ideas, resources, funny moments and kind words when you need a bit of reassurance. It's a very special purple family and I am incredibly proud to be a part of it.'
