Relaxing music to aid children’s learning and development

Every newborn baby in Scotland to receive a music CD to aid their learning and development

In 2012 The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) with the Association of Registrars of Scotland offered a music CD to babies born over that next year.

The disc will include classical music, traditional Scottish songs and popular children’s nursery rhymes. The CD is expected to be given to around 60,000 families in Scotland!

The decision was made after several studies have demonstrated the benefits of playing music to infants. Music has been shown to improve children’s cognitive development by stimulating both the left and right side of their brains simultaneously, and helping them develop skills that will be useful in later life, such as improved spatial-temporal awareness -which will help them in maths lessons!

Playing music to children can also develop their imaginations, creativity and emotional development.

Scientists have found a link between between experiencing positive emotions and heightened cognitive state in children.* Which means that soothing music that makes children feel happy and safe, such as nursery rhymes, can speed up children’s learning development!

Relax Kids have created the https://relaxkids.com/product/little-stars/ for babies and toddlers, with soothing music and a selection of familiar nursery rhymes sang by Marneta Viegas, who also interweaves very simple relaxation techniques between each track.

The Little Stars CD combines the benefits of relaxing music and the benefits of relaxation, with very simple guided relaxation exercises, like wiggle your toes and imagine you are a sleeping bunny…

Each track is also filled with positive affirmations, such as you are special; to help children feel safe, loved and wonderful! Children can understand language well before they can speak it, so the Little Stars CD is suitable even for very young toddlers and babies!
