Self-esteem is a way a child feels about themselves. A child with high or positive self-esteem generally feels good and positive and feels that they are valued and respected, while a child with low or poor self-esteem usually feels worthless, unloved, unsure of their abilities while feeling that they have little to contribute. Children with a positive sense of self are more happy and able to live a positive and productive life. Helping children develop healthy self-esteem is key to them enjoying a successful life.

Children with positive self-esteem will:

play easily with others • take pride in their achievements • tolerate frustrations • handle negative and positive feedback from others • enjoy new tasks and challenges • feel comfortable in their own skin

Children with low self-esteem will:
tend to not believe in themselves • not able to appreciate their talents and abilities • usually talk negatively about themselves • not be able to take praise • often feel unloved and unwanted • often avoid new challenges and tasks

Using words wisely when speaking to children is vital. As children are learning about themselves, they take the words and feelings of adults to heart and base their beliefs about themselves on these words. Therefore a child that is praised and reminded how special and amazing their are will have a better chance at developing a positive sense of self over a child who is constantly put down and told they are stupid!

Regular moments of reflection and relaxation as well as positive praise will have a positive effect on a child's self-esteem. Relax Kids have created CDs to help children develop feelings of self worth.
