Reviews of Mindfulness Classroom Pack
John Fardon - Mental Health Teacher
As a Local Authority teacher for mental health I wholeheartedly recommend Relax Kids to all schools I work with. Individual children and whole classes love to use the exercises and resrouces, which provide them with a great sense of emotional wellbeing. Relax Kids is wonderful for teachers, teaching assistants and learning mentors, especially used alongside SEAL materials, and also for some of the more `troubled youngsters.`
Dr Neil Hawkes Education consultant
Relax Kids resources are in my opinion the best in the world.

I am a learning mentor at a school in milton keynes. I use Relax kids in my sessions and the children absolutely love it. I am placing another order as I now would`nt be without Relax Kids.

After spending many fruitless hours searching for the perfect music to end a PHSE lesson (Personal, Health and Social Education) I discovered `Relax Kids` CDs. I work with 10/11 year olds; who relish in the pre-pubescent `Top of the School` syndrome; pushing boundaries, unable to be still in the moment. Ha, until now!! Two children `nodded off` in this weeks lesson whilst listening to during the relaxation.

am a teacher and I use relax kids almost everyday with 5, 6 and 7 year olds I`ve been doing this for a few years now) and the dinner ladies in our school have even borrowed the CD to use at the end of lunchtime so that the children visualise and relax instead of `the usual lining up`. We have found them to be VERY effective. (for the children AND the adults) I have recommended them to a couple of parents who have found them valuable.

I am a Year 6 teacher at market Harborough C of E Primary. I used the CD with my class during the weeks leading up to their SATs tests in May. They each bought in a pillow & lay down in the hall. All but 2 (boys!) enjoyed it & looked forward to our sessions. Some even fell asleep! I will definitely do some more relaxation sessions next year with my new class.

Children are much calmer after session and it helps them with whatever follows next...I like to do relaxation in the afternoon as some children find the day very long.

How to use:
Breakfast clubs/start of the day
Pupils can listen to a track from the Relax Kids CD to focus their attention so they are ready to learn. The affirmations such as ‘chest taps’ and ‘mirror’ are a positive way to start the school day. Stretches such as ‘pencil’ are useful to help prepare children for lessons.

Class time
At the beginning of the class, allow children to sit at their desk with their head in their hands and play a track from the Relax Kids CD. Alternatively, read a visualisation out to the class as you play some soft background music.

Children can practice some self-massage or peer massage as a short break to bring them back to a positive learning state.

A simple breathing exercise such as ‘balloon blowing’ or ‘long breaths’ helps a child focus their mind. You may like to stop regularly and use exercises such as ‘traffic control’ or ‘bubbles’ to increase concentration and productivity.

Use a meditation/visualisation as an introduction to creative writing or any topic work.

Wet Play
Children are often more energetic and restless during wet play. Play a track or read out ‘soaking in sunshine’ or ‘chocolate’ from the visualisation section.

Time Out
Exercises such as ‘counting’ or ‘peace breaths’ can be an effective way of giving a pupil a chance to calm down. A pupil who needs time out could also listen to a track on a personal CD/MP3 player.

After Break and Lunch
A couple of minutes of relaxation after breaks is a great way to re-focus and prepare children for their next lesson. ‘Tummy breaths’ and ‘sea breathing’ are perfect exercises for this.

Between classes
Play a short relaxation track in between subjects to give children a short break. Exercises such as ‘flower’ and ‘ear rub’ are also good at this time.

Circle Time/PSHE/SEAL
Affirmation exercises such as ‘pass the flower’ and ‘pass the box’ are perfect for Circle Time, helping children feel valued and make a contribution. Children could also give each other a back and neck massage, helping strengthen peer relationships.

Assembly
By introducing affirmations, breathing exercises and visualisations to the whole school in assembly, you can help establish a peaceful learning environment.

Exam Preparation
Start listening to the meditations daily at least two weeks before their exams to help children with their revision. On the day of their exams, allow children to listen to the relaxation CD prior to their exam.

Before Going Home
Prepare children for going home with the ‘big hug’ stretch and a few moments listening to a track from the CD.

Relaxation club
Why not run a weekly 30 or 45 minute relaxation session or lunchtime relaxation club, taking a couple of exercises from each category?
