Candle meditation for children
Encourage children to relieve their stress and anxiety with this simple meditation
Families have been fire gazing since the beginning of time. It is relaxing, restful and restorative. Watching the flame is mesmerising and can take us into a deeply relaxed state.
Here is a simple candle meditation that you might like to try out with your children.
Light a candle or for younger children get a battery operated candle or even a picture of a candle flame.
Tell children that you are all going to focus on the flame for just 1 mins or 2 mins or 5 mins.
Turn the lights down low and close the curtains to create a warm and comforting environment. Make sure the room temperature is comfortable so children are not too hot or too cold.
Please note - it goes without saying - not to leave children alone in a room with a burning candle.
Place the candle of picture at eye level or just below. Ensure that children are not bending their heads too far forward or slumping their bodies as they sit in a chair or sit comfortably on the floor.
Ask children to stare at the candle and watch the flame flicker and move.
Encourage children to concentrate on the flame and try to think of nothing else but the flame.
To start with, other thoughts may come into their mind, but let the thoughts gently move away as they refocus on the flame.
After some practise, children can imagine that they are breathing in the light of the candle and breathing it out.
They can imagine that they are the light of the candle.
