It can be hard to decipher whether or not your child is suffering from stress or simply having a tantrum. Needless to say, neither are pleasant for the adults/peers on the outside. In short, most children experience tantrums, but when a chid is stressed, significant changes in their persona are apparent.

Emotions that we have can be generally categorised as positive or negative - however, we need to listen to both types of emotion with equal importance. When we do that, we can see our negative emotions develop into positive ones.

Stress may be a reaction to an upsetting or hurtful experience. It can also appear because of frustration, loss of control, being taken out of a comfort zone or feeling in competition.

Feelings of stress are NORMAL and experienced by EVERYONE.

Symptoms may include:
* Hyperventilating
* Blood flow to the face
* Feelings of hopelessness
* Irrational shouting
* Mood swings
* Clenched teeth
* Tight muscles
* Headaches
* Inability to sleep
* Feeling of confusion
* Scratching
* Ulcers

Chat – This feeling can be a strange and irrational one for a child. Tell them, in a light manner about your own stresses so that they come to realise it is an acceptable emotion to have.
Shout – Take your child to an open space and ask them to shout as loud as they can to get rid of their stress. Chances are, they will spend most of their time laughing at the prospect of making a racket, but once you both let yourselves go – instant stress relief.
