Using Rewards to inspire and motivate

Using Rewards to inspire and motivate

How to keep children motivated and happy in the classroom.

Star Cards
Put the Star Cards in a bowl and let children come and pick one when they feel a little down or need a confidence boost.

Daily Mood Card
Each day write up positive mood or quality for the day on the white board. If a child is struggling with a subject, you can draw their attention to the quality and encourage them to use that to give them the confidence to complete the task.

Positive Improvement Charts.
For many children the idea of seeing their reward stickers next to other members of the class, can be daunting, particularly if they do not have so many. You may like to consider making individual praise cards and getting an expanding file. Write a child's name on each index tab and put a praise card in each section. When a child has done particularly well, you can give them a star sticker and/or write a note what it was for and they can take great delight finding their name and adding their sticker to their reward sheet.

Special Folder
Make a special folder out of an A4 ring binder. Make a page for each child. Choose a child per day and ask children to call out all the wonderful and positive things that they can think of for that child. Write them down in their folder.

Golden Time
Keep some golden counters (cut star or heart shapes out of gold card). Each time a member of the class achieves, ask them to put one golden counter into the box or jar. Each counter can be traded in for 5 minutes of golden time at the end of the week.

Grid of Greatness
Give each child a grid of 25 or 50 or 100 squares. They can keep this grid on their desk. When they have produced good work, helped out or shown any other positive behaviour, they can have one square stamped - similar to having a Costa or Starbucks loyalty card. You can decide if they receive a prize every 10 or 25 stamps.

Tree of Achievement (younger children)
Draw a picture of a tree (without leaves) or a garden (without flowers) and put it up on the wall. Each time a child shows positive behaviour, they can add a leaf or flower and write their name on it. As the term progresses, the garden or tree will fill up with flowers and leaves.

Certificates
Hand out Certificates recognising positive contributions to the class.

Weekly Prize Giving
Make some tickets with numbers from 1-50. During the week, if a child performs well, give them a ticket. They have to look after their ticket and at the end of the week, pull two numbers out of a hat. The children with those two numbers, win a prize.
